Preparing Your Home for Hurricane Season

Preparing for hurricane season is an important thing that Texas homeowners can do. However, hurricane prep can be overwhelming, especially when you consider all of the different parts of your home that might need protection. The Show Plumbing team wants to give you one less system to worry about! Here’s what you need to do to prepare your plumbing for hurricane season.

Book an Inspection in Advance

It’s important to start preparing before hurricane season hits. This way, you can tackle all necessary repairs with plenty of time to spare. Not sure if you need repairs? Book a plumbing inspection. A plumber can check your entire plumbing system, including your sump pump, sewer lines, and exterior drains. Once they evaluate your plumbing system, they can go over any necessary repairs and give you tips specifically for hurricane season.

Prepare for Flooding

Flooding is the most common type of plumbing damage during hurricanes. Luckily though, there are a few easy ways to help prevent flooding. Inspect the ceilings inside of your home and the foundation perimeter outside of your home for signs of water damage, including visible water marks, dimples, warped material, and/or signs of general wear. Make sure a plumber inspects these areas thoroughly and get them repaired ASAP.

Learn About Your Main Water Valve

Turning off your main water valve is one of the most important things to do during a hurricane. This will protect your pipes while also protecting your family from a contaminated water supply. Make sure you (and other household members) know where the main water valve is and how to turn it on and off. Turning off your hot water heater is important, too.

Since you won’t be able to use your water supply while the valve is turned off, make preparations ahead of time. Stock up on plenty of drinking water, and also fill the bathtubs. You can use the bathtub water to manually flush your toilets.
